Naturopathic Doctors use seven primary modalities to help their patients achieve improved health. Each Naturopathic Doctor is trained in all seven modalities; however, we all practice naturopathic medicine with emphasis in different areas. My preferred areas of focus are clinical nutrition, homeopathic medicine, acupuncture, herbal medicines and lifestyle counselling.

Clinical Nutrition:

Nutrition can be used therapeutically to strengthen and support the biochemical pathways in the body. There are a wide variety of diet protocols, which can be used to help the body cleanse and heal itself. Food sensitivities are a common cause of many symptoms and diseases, naturopathic medicine can help people identify their food sensitivities and provide information on maintaining a healthy diet while avoiding the offending foods. Each treatment protocol is tailored to the individual based on their current needs and personal health history. Clinical nutrition also includes the use of vitamins and minerals therapeutically.

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine:

Traditional Chinese Medicine is an ancient system of medicine that includes the use of acupuncture, herbs, diet and lifestyle to influence and balance the energy of all the organs of the body. Acupuncture uses very fine needles to stimulate the energy channels of the body. Naturopathic Doctors study Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture for the duration of their four-year education.

Homeopathic Medicine:

Modern homeopathy is a medical treatment and philosophy pioneered by Samuel Hahnemann in the early 1800s. Homeopathy works on the principle of like cures like. Symptoms similar to symptoms caused by large doses of a substance may be treated with tiny doses of that substance. Homeopathy allows the body to heal itself by stimulating its own innate healing abilities. Homeopathic remedies are made from a variety of natural substances and have no harmful side effects, which make them safe treatments during pregnancy and childhood.

Botanical Medicine:

Botanical or herbal medicine uses specific parts of the plants to strengthen, support and nourish the body. Botanical medicines have been used for centuries as a primary method of health care and until the development of pharmaceutical drugs; herbs were used as primary treatment options worldwide. Herbs should not be used without supervision in individuals on medications or with pre-existing health conditions. Some herbs can interact with prescription medications and others are contraindicated in certain conditions.

Hydrotherapy:

This method of treatment uses hot and cold water to improve blood flow and promote healing in organs and tissues. Hydrotherapy can be applied locally or used constitutionally as a gentle and cleansing method of healing.

Physical Medicine:

Physical medicine is a mixture of treatments that includes bodywork, cranio-sacral therapy and spinal manipulation. Naturopathic Doctors will often refer patients for massage therapy, physiotherapy, chiropractic manipulation or different types of exercise when it is indicated.

Lifestyle Counselling and Stress Management:

Lifestyle counselling is important to encourage people to make lifestyle changes to support their health and prevent diseases. As Naturopathic Doctors treat the whole person they also discuss the emotional health of a person as negative emotions can impact the health of the individual.
